Leonhard Lass

artist & lecturer

As part of the art group “Depart” (*1999) Leonhard Lass constructs audiovisual worlds as dynamic systems – transitory sandboxes of synchronicities which border on the surreal and enable the unexpected by means of cross -modal emergence. Deeply rooted in the digital, Depart explores the ritualistic character of algorithms and ventures deliberately into the uncanny – creating unique moments that are coined by formally rigorous and profound aesthetics. Since 1999, Leonhard has been working with Gregor Ladenhauf as Depart on audiovisual installations and performances that were internationally exhibited (Europe, USA, China, Russia). He also teaches “Mapping the Data” at the University of Art and Design Linz and “Generative Art” at the FH Hagenberg. Depart’s latest VR Installation “The Entropy Gardens” received a Honorary Mention at the Ars Electronica Festival 2020.
